{"id":128695,"date":"2020-10-28T13:55:18","date_gmt":"2020-10-28T12:55:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsroom.ferrovial.com\/articles\/el-origen-de-los-epis\/"},"modified":"2025-03-07T22:22:38","modified_gmt":"2025-03-07T21:22:38","slug":"el-origen-de-los-epis","status":"publish","type":"article","link":"https:\/\/newsroom.ferrovial.com\/en-us\/articles\/el-origen-de-los-epis\/","title":{"rendered":"The origin of PPE"},"content":{"rendered":"    <section class=\"wysiwyg text-editor \" id=\"\">\n        <div class=\"container container--narrow container--p-10\">\n            <h2>Mask<\/h2>\n<p>During the Roman period, Pliny the Elder described the use of animal bladders to protect miners from inhaling cinnabar dust.<br \/>\nThe &#8220;beak mask&#8221; was created in Europe in the 12th century to protect doctors who were treating people with plague.<\/p>\n<h2>Ear protection<\/h2>\n<p>The \ufb01rst patent for earplugs was granted in 1884. In 1907, German pharmacist Max Negwer develo-ped the \ufb01rst modern earplugs for factory workers. International sales rocketed after World War II as soldiers came home with cases of deafness.<\/p>\n<h2>Footwear<\/h2>\n<p>The \ufb01rst protective shoes were wooden clogs used by French farmers to protect their feet from sharp, heavy agricultural tools and from being trodden on by animals. After World War II, the \ufb01rst steel toe safety boots were invented for German factory workers.<\/p>\n<h2>Helmet<\/h2>\n<p>Gold miners made helmets shaped like bowler hats from hard felt stu\ufb00ed with cotton to protect their heads from falling rocks.<br \/>\nIn 1919, the Bullard Company in California patented a hard hat made of steamed canvas, glue and black paint, which marked the beginning of the widespread use of helmets.<\/p>\n<h2>Eye protection<\/h2>\n<p>The Eskimos developed goggles to protect their eyes from sunlight re\ufb02ected o\ufb00 the snow. Made of wood, bone or ivory, they had slits that \ufb01ltered the glare. Some such goggles are over 2,000 years old. The \ufb01rst safety goggles were developed in the US in 1909 by the Julius King Optical Company.<\/p>\n<h2>Gloves<\/h2>\n<p>The \ufb01rst use of surgical gloves is attributed to William Stewart Halsted, a US surgeon who was operating with nurse Caroline Hampton, who su\ufb00ered from dermatitis due to contact with antiseptics. In 1890, Halsted designed rubber gloves that could resist both heat and chemicals. Hampton&#8217;s eczema disappeared.
