Melbourne’s public art scene has a stunning addition, with a\u00a0new sculpture\u00a0<\/strong>unveiled alongside the Princes\u00a0Freeway in Werribee.<\/p>\n

Backyard<\/em>\u00a0by local artist\u00a0Jon\u00a0Campbell<\/a>\u00a0represents a stylised pop version of Campbell’s childhood backyard in the nearby suburb of Altona.<\/p>\n

The sculpture forms part of the $1.8\u00a0billion\u00a0Western Roads Upgrade<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0public-private partnership \u2013 the Victorian Government’s largest single investment in Melbourne’s suburban road network.<\/p>\n

In partnership with\u00a0Major Roads Projects Victoria<\/a>, the Netflow consortium has delivered eight priority upgrades including three new bridges over the freeway, road widenings, intersection upgrades, 30\u00a0kilometres\u00a0of duplicated lanes, 37\u00a0rehabilitated roads, and more than 50\u00a0kilometres of walking and cycling paths across Melbourne’s west.<\/p>\n

Netflow is now maintaining a 260-kilometre road network from Footscray to Werribee for an additional 20 years in partnership with the\u00a0Department of Transport<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Backyard<\/em>\u00a0was the result of an independent commission selection process run by one of Australia’s leading sculpture authority, Melbourne-based\u00a0McClelland Sculpture Park+Gallery<\/a>.<\/p>\n

An independent selection advisory panel reviewed more than 70 submissions \u2013 many from local artists \u2013 before making its recommendations to Netflow.<\/p>\n

\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 local artist and\u00a0Victoria University College of Arts & Education<\/a>\u00a0Visual Art Convenor Dr Megan Campbell<\/p>\n

\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Geelong Gallery<\/a>\u00a0Senior Curator Lisa\u00a0Sullivan<\/p>\n

McClelland Director\u00a0Lisa Byrne<\/strong>\u00a0congratulated Jon on his work, saying the sculpture will inform and enliven the experience of road users travelling between Melbourne and Geelong.<\/p>\n

“Public art has become a highly-visible and memorable component of major projects,”<\/em>\u00a0Ms\u00a0Byrne said.<\/p>\n

“<\/em>Backyard<\/em>\u00a0echoes aspects of everyday life including sport and family, linking them to contemporary culture and history through design, colour, sculpture and storytelling. It embodies high aesthetic aspiration and constitutes a significant artistic statement for Melbourne’s western suburbs, and Australian sculpture more broadly.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Artist\u00a0Jon Campbel<\/strong>l said the sculpture relates to commercial freeway billboards with its scale and composition.<\/p>\n

“I’ve always liked the social aspect backyards bring to our lives,” Mr\u00a0Campbell said.<\/em><\/p>\n

“The backyard was a site of influential activity in my upbringing, playing cricket, family barbeques and birthdays. It was a space in which to dream and allowed me as a youngster to imagine hitting the winning runs or kicking the winning goal.<\/em><\/p>\n

“There is a myth attached to the backyard and a strong desire to have one. Maybe the backyard is not everyone’s dream, but as a space for connection, contemplation and shared activity it remains a desirable and aspirational goal of suburban Melbourne.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Victorian Treasurer and Member for Werribee\u00a0Tim Pallas<\/strong>\u00a0said, “Backyard\u00a0celebrates the joys of everyday life in the western suburbs and serves as a visual reminder of the great work delivered as part of the $1.8 billion Western Roads Upgrade.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Victorian Minister for Transport Infrastructure\u00a0Jacinta Allan<\/strong>\u00a0said, “We’ve taken action to deliver the biggest ever single investment in Melbourne’s suburban road network that will serve road users in the west for decades to come. What better way to mark this transformational project than with an eye-catching new addition to the urban landscape in the west.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Netflow CEO Pedro Uzquiza<\/strong>\u00a0said the art highlighted the community benefit brought by successful public-private partnerships.<\/p>\n
