Compared to the TBMs used on the Crossrail project (7.1m), the Northern line extension (6.03m) and Thames Tideway project (8.85m), this machine dwarfs other similar plant to have been operated in the UK in recent years. It will also be larger in diameter than those working on the delivery of High Speed 2. The length of the TBM is approximately\u00a0<strong>82 metres<\/strong>, and it weighs<strong>\u00a01,800 tonnes<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 1200 tonnes of that being the enormous shield which equals\u00a0<strong>95 times the weight of a double decker bus.<\/strong>\u00a0The heaviest Crossrail TBM shield weighed in at 526tonnes, Northern Line Extension at 310tonnes and Tideway at 780tonnes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Silvertown Tunnel TBM<\/strong>\u00a0will set off from the Silvertown launch chamber, piling for which is now completed and is currently being excavated, and will then be rotated and relaunched from the Greenwich Peninsula, to excavate the second tunnel, completing a total drive of<strong>\u00a02,244m<\/strong>. The ability to turn the TBM around is an important feature of its bespoke design which also incorporates the need for it to navigate its way through the stiff clay layers and boulders in this part of London. When finished, it will have excavated nearly<strong>\u00a0600,000 tonnes of material<\/strong>\u00a0to form the tunnel &#8211; which will\u00a0<strong>be extracted by barges along the river\u00a0<\/strong>to keep construction traffic to a minimum during the project.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Juan Jose Bregel<\/strong>, Project Director, Riverlinx CJV:\u00a0&#8220;<em>It gives me and the delivery team an enormous sense of pride to have reached this important milestone for the Silvertown Tunnel project. Not only seeing the works really taking shape in preparation for launch at the two main sites at Silvertown and Greenwich but feeling the excitement of what is still to come as the pieces of the TBM arrive to be reassembled and launched in Spring\u00a02022&#8243;.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-M wp-image-104427\" src=\"https:\/\/newsroom.ferrovial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2021\/12\/equipo-tuneladora-silvertown-800x391.jpg\" alt=\"Equipo-Tuneladora-Silvertown\" width=\"800\" height=\"391\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.newsroom.ferrovial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/15142456\/equipo-tuneladora-silvertown-800x391.jpg 800w, https:\/\/static.newsroom.ferrovial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/15142456\/equipo-tuneladora-silvertown-300x146.jpg 300w, https:\/\/static.newsroom.ferrovial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/15142456\/equipo-tuneladora-silvertown-768x375.jpg 768w, https:\/\/static.newsroom.ferrovial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/15142456\/equipo-tuneladora-silvertown.jpg 850w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>A new tunnel under the River\u00a0Thames<\/h2>\n<p><strong>The Silvertown Tunnel<\/strong>\u00a0will be a new\u00a0<strong>1.4km twin-lane road tunnel under the River Thames<\/strong>, linking North Greenwich and Silvertown. Once open, the tolled crossing will also\u00a0<strong>reduce congestion<\/strong>\u00a0as associated pollution, as well as improve the reliability and resilience of the Blackwall Tunnel, where drivers face daily queues, with the tunnel closing for incidents more than 600 times a year on average.<\/p>\n<p>Construction work is well underway and site operations have been established on both sides of the river in preparation for the arrival of the TBM. The first pieces have already begun to arrive on site, keeping to programme for launch in\u00a0<strong>Spring 2022<\/strong>. Due to the extraordinary weight of the components, and the location of the sites, a combination of barge movements along the Thames, as well as lorry movements, are being deployed to transport the pieces. The strategy being used aims to\u00a0<strong>minimise road use and optimise river transportation.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When completed in\u00a0<strong>2025<\/strong>, the Silvertown Tunnel will be the first new road crossing east of Tower Bridge since the Dartford Crossing was built over\u00a0<strong>30 years ago.<\/strong>\u00a0The tunnel will have a dedicated lane for buses, coaches and heavy goods vehicles, meaning there will be a significant increase in the number of buses crossing the river and much greater opportunity to use public transport.\u00a0 Buildings above the tunnel\u00a0entrances, and plans to improve walking, cycling and the urban environment, are also part of the\u00a0<strong>major regeneration of both sides of the river.<\/strong><\/p>\n
