{"id":16752,"date":"2018-08-24T17:33:45","date_gmt":"2018-08-24T15:33:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsroom.ferrovial.com\/?post_type=new&#038;p=16752"},"modified":"2022-12-21T09:13:08","modified_gmt":"2022-12-21T08:13:08","slug":"undurraga-dam-vizcaya","status":"publish","type":"new","link":"https:\/\/newsroom.ferrovial.com\/en\/news\/undurraga-dam-vizcaya\/","title":{"rendered":"Ferrovial Agroman inaugurates one of the most important projects in Vizcaya to guarantee region\u2019s water supply"},"content":{"rendered":"    <section class=\"wysiwyg text-editor \" id=\"\">\n        <div class=\"container container--narrow container--p-10\">\n            <p>As part of the Und\u00farraga Dam project, <strong>a 1,300-meter bypass tunnel has been built<\/strong> from the tail-end of the reservoir to the foot of the dam through the rocky massif on the left side of the reservoir, with two 900 mm diameter PRFV pipes embedded in the floor of the tunnel. At the tail-end of the reservoir a diversion dam and an intake have also been constructed, through which water is diverted to the bypass tunnel and to the Venta Alta DWTP. At the exit of the tunnel, a discharge has been built at the foot of the dam to reduce water flow.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Objectives of the project<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>To <strong>improve the hydrological safety<\/strong> of the Und\u00farraga dam, significantly increasing the structure&#8217;s relief capacity \u2013 by 64 m3\/s for the maximum storage level and to 110 m3\/s for the crest elevation \u2013 complying with the technical regulation of dam and reservoir security by being able to create laminar flow in cases of extreme flooding (T = 5,000 YEARS &#8211; 288 m3\/s)<\/li>\n<li>To <strong>guarantee drinking water<\/strong> to the Venta Alta DWTP, directly supplying a 5m3\/s flow from the tail-end of the reservoir without using the available reservoir storage volume or the existing intake. This objective responds to the need to ensure supplies to the Metropolitan Area of \u200b\u200bBilbao in the event of an emergency or in the case of repair to the Und\u00farraga dam preventing its functioning.<\/li>\n<li>To use the bypass tunnel for muddy overflow from the Arratia river in the event of heavy rains that might affect the quality of supply from the Und\u00farraga Reservoir.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The project, along with other drainage work, achieves a peak flow return period of 1,000 and 5,000 years, as anticipated in Spain\u2019s <a title=\"Flood Prevention Plan\" href=\"http:\/\/www.euskadi.eus\/contenidos\/informacion\/planes_inundaciones\/es_doc\/adjuntos\/PEE%20inundaciones-es.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"dofollow noopener\">Comprehensive Flood Prevention Plan<\/a>, used by the Bilbao-Bizkaia Water Consortium.<\/p>\n        <\/div>\n    <\/section>\n    <section class=\"image-section \" id=\"\">\n        <div class=\"container container--narrow container--p-10\">\n        <figure class=\"image-section__figure\">\n            <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.newsroom.ferrovial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/15152907\/38g_23-7-18-00013.jpg\" title=\"undurraga-dam-vizcaya-spain\" alt=\"\" class=\"image-section__image\">\n                    <\/figure>\n        <\/div>\n    <\/section>\n    <section class=\"wysiwyg text-editor \" id=\"\">\n        <div class=\"container container--narrow container--p-10\">\n            <h3><strong>Attendees at the event<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Representing the Bilbao Bizkaia Water Consortium at the event were <strong>Ricardo Barkala<\/strong>, President; <strong>Pedro Barreiro<\/strong>, Manager; <strong>Jos\u00e9 Mar\u00eda Villanueva<\/strong>, Technical Director and <strong>Eduardo Elguezabal<\/strong>, Exploitation Director. Mart\u00ednez<\/strong>, Manager; and on behalf of the Provincial Council of Vizcaya, Deputy <strong>Elena Onzueta<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Representing Ferrovial Agroman were <strong>\u00c1ngel Luis S\u00e1nchez<\/strong>, Director of Zone I Construction; <strong>Juan Mag\u00edn Lozano<\/strong>, Director of Civil Works for Spain and Portugal; <strong>Alberto Val<\/strong>, Civil Works Manager of the Zone, as well as Project Manager <strong>Enrique de las Cuevas<\/strong>, among others.<\/p>\n<p>The construction team, led by Manager <strong>Alberto Val<\/strong>, included <strong>Enrique de
