The\u00a0407 ETR<\/strong> has been described as the\u00a0jewel in the crown<\/strong> of the group’s toll road assets. The highway extends 108 km\u00a0from Burlington in the west, to Pickering in the east, just to the north of Toronto in the state of Ontario, Canada. It provides fast, efficient services to\u00a0around\u00a0370,000 vehicles<\/strong> on\u00a0a typical workday.<\/p>\n

Conceived as an\u00a0alternative route to one of the most congested roads in North America<\/strong>, this fully electronic toll road system operates without the need for toll barriers. The so-called\u00a0‘freeflow’<\/strong> system allows very high traffic volumes to be handled without long waiting times.<\/p>\n

\"\"Having been honored several times already for its dedication to providing world class customer service, it was recently presented with the
\n2008 National Award for Innovation and Excellence by the Canadian Council for PPPs<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

This\u00a099-year concession<\/strong>\u00a0has been operated and managed by a consortium of companies led by Cintra,\u00a0since it\u00a0was leased by the Ontario provincial government in 1999.<\/p>\n

This\u00a0benchmark infrastructure<\/strong> concession continues to generate interest from a whole range of parties: customers, competitors and several other groups looking to learn from experiences and best practices.<\/p>\n

The concession company enjoys\u00a0full control of the highway and its tolls<\/strong>,\u00a0provided that\u00a0traffic volumes are maintained above a certain level. This allows optimisation of the revenues and toll prices to be adjusted according to the time saving offered.<\/p>\n

In 2007,\u00a0the 407 ETR represented half of the value of Cintra<\/strong>, with an increase in revenues of more than 11% on the previous year.<\/p>\n
