{"id":50894,"date":"2019-01-02T10:26:35","date_gmt":"2019-01-02T09:26:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsroom.ferrovial.com\/?post_type=new&#038;p=50894"},"modified":"2025-04-10T17:56:57","modified_gmt":"2025-04-10T15:56:57","slug":"2018-a-year-in-news","status":"publish","type":"new","link":"https:\/\/newsroom.ferrovial.com\/en\/news\/2018-a-year-in-news\/","title":{"rendered":"2018: A Year in News"},"content":{"rendered":"    <section class=\"wysiwyg text-editor \" id=\"\">\n        <div class=\"container container--narrow container--p-10\">\n            <h2><strong>January<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>January set the pace for a great year for Ferrovial, extending the <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.ferrovial.com\/en\/press_releases\/facility-management-australian-department-of-defence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">management contract<\/a> with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.defence.gov.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Australian Department of Defense<\/a> for <strong>300 million euros<\/strong>, through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ferrovial.com\/es\/lineas-de-negocio\/ferrovial-servicios\/sobre-ferrovial-servicios\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ferrovial Services<\/a> Subsidiary, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.broadspectrum.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Broadspectrum<\/a>. The new contract will last until 2021 and cover a wide range of services. The company also announced its plan to carry out services for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shell.com.au\/about-us\/projects-and-locations\/qgc.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Shell-QGC<\/a> in Queensland until December of 2018. Both plans marked the move towards a strong presence in the facility management and energy sectors.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>February<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>February turned out to be a beneficial month both on and off the books\u2014first <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.ferrovial.com\/en\/press_releases\/financial-results-2017\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announcing<\/a> a net profit of 454 million euros, an increase of 21%, in 2017, and secondly announcing its involvement in 22 water and <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.ferrovial.com\/es\/notas_prensa\/infraestructuras-sociales-colombia-peru-tanzania-accion-social-espana-2018\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sanitation projects<\/a> in Latin America and Africa, as well as renovating Red Cross soup kitchens and food banks across Spain.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>March<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Continuing its fruitful <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.ferrovial.com\/en\/press_releases\/new-water-system-el-salado-colombia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">relationship<\/a> with the Colombian community <strong>of El Salado<\/strong>, Ferrovial together with <a href=\"https:\/\/ayudaenaccion.org\/ong\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ayuda en Acci\u00f3n<\/a> and Fundaci\u00f3n Semana delivered <strong>new water systems<\/strong> to the community such as repairing and expanding the <strong>aqueduct system<\/strong> as well as forming a Water Committee to maintain and operate the new system.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>April<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>April started on great note with Chairman Rafael del Pino announcing that the <strong>Managed Lanes Project in Texas<\/strong> would soon begin to pay dividends in 2019 and 2020 as well as revenue growth and a strong financial position from 2017. This month also marked greats honors for two of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ferrovial.com\/en\/projects\/heathrow-airport\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Heathrow<\/a> terminals. Heathrow Terminal 2 won the prize for the <strong>best terminal in the world<\/strong>. Passengers cast their votes for the \u201c<strong>Queen\u2019s Terminal<\/strong>\u201d and not far behind came Heathrow\u2019s Terminal 5 as fourth best in the world in the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldairportawards.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">World Airport Awards<\/a>\u201d 2018 by <em>Skytrax<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>May<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Even though there weren\u2019t any April showers (at least metaphorically speaking), May did bring plenty of flowers (also metaphorically speaking). These blooming buds included such <strong>achievements<\/strong> as the award to <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.ferrovial.com\/es\/nivel-1\/construccion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Budimex<\/a>, Polish subsidiary of Ferrovial, for <a href=\"http:\/\/buildercorp.pl\/2018\/03\/28\/topbuilder-2018-laureaci\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Top Builder 2018<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/wiceawards.com\/2018-winners.html#.XBppplVKi01\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">European Women in Construction &amp; Engineering Awards 2018<\/a> award to Sara Collado of Ferrovial Agroman Chile for <strong>Best Woman Civil Engineer<\/strong>. In addition to Sara Collado, <strong>14 other Ferrovial professionals<\/strong> were finalists in various categories. Fidel L\u00f3pez Soria was also named <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.ferrovial.com\/en\/press_releases\/fidel-lopez-soria-ceo-ferrovial-services\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CEO of Ferrovial Services<\/a>, taking over the position from Santiago Olivares, bringing a fresh perspective to the lovely spring month.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>June<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Things started to heat up in the first of the summer months, and especially in the steamy southern state of <strong>Texas<\/strong> where Ferrovial was awarded the <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.ferrovial.com\/en\/press_releases\/webber-texas-sh-146-ih-10\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">project to widen two roads<\/a> through its subsidiary <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.ferrovial.com\/en\/photo_gallery\/webber-construction-projects-in-texas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Webber<\/a>. Construction on <strong>the SH 146 in Houston<\/strong> and <strong>the IH-10 in San Antonio<\/strong> is planned to begin in January and October of 2019, respectively.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>July<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Things got off to a booming start for Ferrovial at the beginning of July with the announcement of <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.ferrovial.com\/en\/press_releases\/construction-rutas-del-loa-road-project-chile\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">two projects in Chile<\/a>\u2014upgrading and widening 11 kilometers of <strong>Ruta 25<\/strong> and building a 25-kilometer bypass, as well as erecting\u00a0 14-story building for the <strong>University of Chile<\/strong>; both contracts summing to <strong>321 million euros<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ferrovial.com\/en\/business-lines\/airports\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ferrovial Airports<\/a>, along with its partners that make up the Great Hall Partners (GHP), celebrated the groundbreaker ceremony at <strong>Jeppesen Terminal<\/strong> which commenced the construction of the <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.ferrovial.com\/en\/news\/great-hall-project-denver-construction\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Great Hall Project.<\/a> GHP agreed to design and build over three and a half years and later maintain and operate specific commercial areas of the terminal for 30 years, improving the overall passenger experience at DEN.<\/p>\n<p>The month ended on a productive note, inaugurating the extension of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ferrovial.com\/en\/projects\/north-tarrant-express-toll-road\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">North Tarrant Express<\/a> (NTE) <strong>two months ahead of schedule<\/strong> after four years of work. The <strong>101.1-mile extension<\/strong> (just over 16km), which involved an average of <strong>1,400 professionals <\/strong>each day and <strong>1,000 suppliers <\/strong>was built by Ferrovial subsidiary, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ferrovial.com\/en\/business-lines\/toll-roads\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cintra<\/a>, to relieve one the <strong>Dallas-Fort Worth axis<\/strong>, which was considered some of the most congested road transportation in the country.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>August<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>At the beginning of August Ferrovial signed a <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.ferrovial.com\/en\/press_releases\/sustainable-liquidity-line\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new liquidity line<\/a> with 16 financial institutions, adhering to Ferrovial\u2019s strategy of reducing funding costs, extending maturity, and incorporating <strong>environmental, social, and governance criteria<\/strong>. The new liquidity line amounted for<strong> 900 million euros<\/strong> for five years, a reduction from the previous <strong>1,250-million-euro<\/strong> facility.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>September<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>At the start of September, work officially began on the <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.ferrovial.com\/en\/news\/western-roads-upgrade-award\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Western Roads Upgrade project<\/a>. The project entails first demolishing the old bridge in order to construct a new two-lane bridge running in both directions over the <strong>Princes Freeway<\/strong>, as well as new access roads and pedestrian and cycle paths, making it the Australian State of Victoria\u2019s largest single investment in its road network to date.<\/p>\n<p>In Poland, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.budimex.com.pl\/pl\/site.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Budimex<\/a> signed <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.ferrovial.com\/en\/press_releases\/budimex-signs-two-road-building-contracts-in-poland-worth-e155-million-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">two contracts<\/a> to build a section of the <strong>A1 highway<\/strong> and <strong>10.5-kilometer section of the S19<\/strong> with a combined value of <strong>155 million euros<\/strong>. The construction done on the two roads will improve connections to neighboring countries.<\/p>\n<p>Ferrovial continued to receive good news related to road projects in September with their being awarded with <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.ferrovial.com\/en\/press_releases\/ferrovial-awarded-three-new-road-projects-in-texas-worth-e308-million-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">three new road projects<\/a> in Texas worth <strong>308 million euros<\/strong>. The projects include the widening of the <strong>IH-10 in Houston <\/strong>and the <strong>FM-156 in Fort Worth<\/strong>. The projects also include building a bridge and an underpass on the <strong>IH-35 in Austin<\/strong>. This award asserted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ferrovial.com\/en\/business-lines\/construction\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ferrovial Agroman\u2019s<\/a> subsidiary, <a href=\"https:\/\/wwebber.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Webber<\/a>, as one of the leading road builders in Texas.<\/p>\n<p>To cap off the month, Ferrovial announced its being listed on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sustainability-indices.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dow Jones Sustainability Index<\/a> for the <strong>17<sup>th<\/sup> consecutive year<\/strong>. It is the only <strong>Spanish construction and engineering company<\/strong> to be listed on both the world and the European DJSI.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>October<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The launch of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wondo.es\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WONDO<\/a>, the <strong>urban mobility platform<\/strong>, got Ferrovial off to the right start at the beginning of <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.ferrovial.com\/en\/press_releases\/wondo-urban-mobility-platform\/\">October<\/a>. The unique startup that combines a range of modes of transportation such as <strong>public<\/strong> <strong>transport, taxis, and private car sharing and ridesharing<\/strong> <strong>operators<\/strong> conducted a pilot test for large event in the summer in Madrid, resulting in a more convenient, efficient, and affordable trip.<\/p>\n<p>Ferrovial also began to lead the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.ferrovial.com\/en\/press_releases\/robotics-processing-municipal-waste\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ZRR for Municipal Waste<\/a>\u201d project, which analyzes the implementation of <strong>robotic waste sorting<\/strong>, which is partially funded through the EU\u2019s EIT Climate-KIC and would take place over a 21-month period.<\/p>\n<p>October was also an exciting month for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ferrovial.com\/en\/business-lines\/ferrovial-services\/services-in-the-world\/united-kingdom\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Amey<\/a>, a subsidiary of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ferrovial.com\/en\/business-lines\/ferrovial-services\/services-in-the-world\/united-kingdom\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ferrovial Services<\/a>, as it was chosen by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/organisations\/highways-england\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Highways England<\/a> to maintain roads in <strong>Area 10<\/strong>, which connects the cities of Liverpool, Manchester, and the area surrounding the North West of England. The <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.ferrovial.com\/en\/press_releases\/road-maintenance-uk-area-10\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">15-year contract<\/a> holds a value of over <strong>366 million euros<\/strong> and will put Amery in charge of maintaining <strong>501 kilometers<\/strong> of roads.<\/p>\n<p>The end of the month brought interesting changes as the <strong>Board of Directors<\/strong> of Ferrovial named <strong>Alejandro de la Joya<\/strong> and <strong>Ignacio Gast\u00f3n<\/strong> as the <strong>CEOs<\/strong> of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cintra.es\/es\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cintra<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ferrovial.com\/es\/lineas-de-negocio\/construccion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ferrovial Agroman<\/a>, respectively. Both men have spent most theirs careers as part of the Ferrovial team and would spend the following three months working with the former CEO of Cintra, <strong>Enrique D\u00edaz-Rato<\/strong>, to complete a smooth transition period.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>November<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>November brought <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.ferrovial.com\/en\/press_releases\/financial-closure-ruta-del-cacao\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the financial closure<\/a> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.ferrovial.com\/en\/press_releases\/toll-road-bucaramanga-barrancabermeja-yondo-colombia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ruta del Cacao toll road concession<\/a> through Cintra, one which will last <strong>25 years<\/strong>, covering the construction of <strong>80.84 kilometers<\/strong> of existing road and the construction of<strong> 16 bridges<\/strong>, <strong>2 viaducts<\/strong>, and <strong>2 tunnels<\/strong>, totaling to length of <strong>5.95 kilometers<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The subsidiary of Ferrovial Services<a href=\"http:\/\/www.broadspectrum.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Broadspectrum<\/a> was chosen in consortium with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mtcaustralia.com.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MTC<\/a> to maintain the facilities of <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.ferrovial.com\/en\/press_releases\/parklea-centre-australia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Parklea Correctional Centre<\/a> in Australia as well as manage inmate rehabilitation programs under a <strong>7-year contract<\/strong> with the possibility of a <strong>5-year extension<\/strong>. The contract is worth AUD 90 million (over <strong>57 million euros<\/strong>) annually.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>December<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>In this year\u2019s edition of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.conama2018.org\/web\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CONAMA<\/a>, of which the slogan was \u201c<strong>Rumbo 20.30<\/strong>\u201d, addressing the dire need for radical changes before the year 2030, there was <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.ferrovial.com\/en\/news\/ferrovial-at-the-national-congress-on-the-enviroment-2018\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">extraordinary participation<\/a> from <strong>Ferrovial<\/strong> staff such as Quality and Environment management, business units, and corporate areas, collaborating in various forums, workings groups, technical sessions, and other activities related to <strong>adaptation to climate change, biodiversity, circular economy, cities, conservation, ecological restoration, mobility, and waste. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The year rounded off on an extremely positive note with the <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.ferrovial.com\/en\/news\/top-rated-websites-informative-content-ferrovial\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rankings release<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.comprend.com\/webranking\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Comprend<\/a> in which they analyzed the websites of the biggest companies in Spain, considering such factors as the company\u2019s communication, its <strong>corporate government<\/strong>, the <strong>sustainability section<\/strong>, its <strong>investor relations<\/strong>, and its professional progress. Ferrovial climbed from the <strong>5<sup>th<\/sup> to the 3<sup>rd<\/sup> position<\/strong> with a score of 55, beating out such companies as <a href=\"https:\/\/spain.arcelormittal.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ArcelorMittal<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.caixabank.es\/index_es.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CaixaBank<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telefonica.com\/es\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Telef\u00f3nica<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ree.es\/es\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Red El\u00e9ctrica<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.naturgy.es\/hogar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Naturgy<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bankia.es\/es\/particulares\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bankia<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbva.es\/particulares\/index.jsp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BBVA<\/a> in their respective ranking order.<\/p>\n        <\/div>\n
