Testing will take place in Portugal, on the <a title=\"Ferrovial Project - Highway Norte Litoral in Portugal\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ferrovial.com\/en\/projects\/highway-norte-litoral\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"dofollow noopener\"> Norte Litoral highway<\/a> (managed by Cintra).<\/p>\n<p>The challenges associated with automated driving affect both the <strong>vehicles<\/strong> and its <strong>technologies<\/strong> and the <strong>road infrastructures<\/strong>; the latter will have to evolve to meet the needs of next-generation vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>This agreement provides for work such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Adapt<strong> inter-city road infrastructures<\/strong> to the challenges associated with automated driving.<\/li>\n<li>Adapt inter-city road infrastructures so as to be able to apply <strong>cooperation communication systems<\/strong> between vehicles and between vehicles and infrastructures.<\/li>\n<li>Perform <strong>services<\/strong> from the infrastructure that are associated with<strong> automated <\/strong>and<strong> connected driving<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Implement and deploy<strong> cooperative systems <\/strong>and<strong> automated driving<\/strong> aid systems in inter-city infrastructures.<\/li>\n<li>Carry out <strong>computer security protocols<\/strong> in communication between vehicles and between vehicles and infrastructures.<\/li>\n<li>Be joint participants in<strong> projects sponsored<\/strong> by domestic and European institutions with regard to inter-city road infrastructures so that automated vehicles can be used on them.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Develop the next pilots<\/h2>\n<p>As a result of this agreement, <strong>testing of autonomous vehicles<\/strong> is being prepared in sections of the Norte Litoral highway on the A27 between Viana do Castelo and Ponte de Lima. The first tests will be carried out in areas with no traffic by cutting off access to several kilometres of road.<\/p>\n<h3>The origins of the project<\/h3>\n<p>Ferrovial&#8217;s relationship with CTAG was born in 2014 with the<a title=\"Toll Road Innovation Ferrovial - Autonomous Vehicles\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ferrovial.com\/en-us\/innovation\/how-do-we-innovate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"dofollow noopener\"> innovation project &#8220;Connected Highway&#8221;<\/a> (<em>Autopista Conectada<\/em>) which was presented by the work group at the 11th Executive Management Programme of Ferrovial&#8217;s Corporate University.<\/p>\n<p>The project aimed to: analyse the progress of autonomous vehicles at the time; study the <strong>possible effects<\/strong> of using autonomous vehicles on highway concessions and public roads; and promote Ferrovial&#8217;s infrastructures as an appropriate and controlled setting for developing autonomous driving systems in both technical and legal terms.<\/p>\n<h4>Centro Tecnol\u00f3gico de Automoci\u00f3n de Galicia (CTAG)<\/h4>\n<p><a title=\"CTAG\" href=\"http:\/\/ctag.com\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"dofollow noopener\"> CTAG <\/a>is a world leader in automobile research, development and innovation and it has been recognised as a technology centre by the <a title=\"Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competition\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mineco.gob.es\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"dofollow noopener\"> Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competition<\/a>. It specialises in passive safety, materials, production processes, new drive systems, new emission reduction systems and transport electronics and smart systems. Its work is performed by <strong>more than 450 professionals<\/strong> in state-of-the-art facilities across <strong>more than 36,000 m2 of labs <\/strong>and<strong> test tracks<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
