{"id":6679,"date":"2017-06-26T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2017-06-26T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsroom.ferrovial.com\/news\/toowoomba-second-range-crossing-project-delivers-engineering-milestone-for-key-viaduct\/"},"modified":"2024-10-28T23:38:41","modified_gmt":"2024-10-28T22:38:41","slug":"toowoomba-second-range-crossing-project-delivers-engineering-milestone-for-key-viaduct","status":"publish","type":"new","link":"https:\/\/newsroom.ferrovial.com\/en\/news\/toowoomba-second-range-crossing-project-delivers-engineering-milestone-for-key-viaduct\/","title":{"rendered":"Toowoomba Second Range Crossing project delivers engineering milestone for key viaduct"},"content":{"rendered":"    <section class=\"wysiwyg text-editor \" id=\"\">\n        <div class=\"container container--narrow container--p-10\">\n            <p>The Ferrovial Agroman Acciona <a title=\"Toowoomba contract closes - Ferrovial\" href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.ferrovial.com\/en\/press_releases\/contractual-close-toowoomba\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"dofollow noopener\">Joint Venture<\/a> has installed the first girder in one of the most challenging engineering elements of the 41km Toowoomba Second Range Crossing<\/p>\n<p>The 800m long viaduct is one of the <strong>main engineering features<\/strong> of the <a title=\"Toowoomba project in Queensland - Ferrovial\" href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.ferrovial.com\/en\/press_releases\/preferred-tender-toll-road-toowoomba-queensland-australia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"dofollow noopener\">Toowoomba Second Range Crossing project<\/a> and will negotiate the steep terrain of the Toowoomba Range.<\/p>\n<p>The viaduct is being built using construction technologies that consist of a <strong>jump form system<\/strong> for the individual bridge piers and a <strong>launching truss gantry<\/strong> for the installation of the <strong>Super T girder beams<\/strong> that will form part of the bridge deck.<\/p>\n<p>This is the latest in a long line of milestones and project achievements. From May 2016, early works cleared the viaduct area by removing thick vegetation, establishing access tracks and preparing platforms for the piling works. A mobile concrete batching plant was also set up in the area to make concrete for the viaduct.<\/p>\n<p>Piling for the foundations of the piers of the viaduct was completed in January 2017. The piles are between <strong>6 and 20m deep,<\/strong> depending on the section of the viaduct they are supporting.<\/p>\n<p>In October 2016, pier construction commenced. Piers are constructed in 4.5m lifts with a jump form technique that climbs up as each section is poured to a maximum height of 51m.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Headstock construction<\/strong> commenced in December 2016. Headstocks are built on top of the piers to carry and support the bridge deck.<\/p>\n<p>To complete the viaduct, the final stage is to construct the bridge deck. Constructing the bridge deck includes the installation of large<strong> precast concrete beams<\/strong> (Super T girders) precast formwork, steel reinforcement and a number of large concrete pours. The Super T girders will be installed using a launching truss gantry, which picks up the girders and positions them to be fed through to the back of the gantry, and over the previously finalized section. The gantry then &#8216;launches&#8217; into its next position.<\/p>\n<p>From May 2017, girder spans will be installed over a three week period, followed by four weeks of pouring four concrete decks to form the bridge deck.<\/p>\n<p>Installation will continue in this fashion until complete.<\/p>\n<h2>About the\u00a0Toowoomba Second Range Crossing<\/h2>\n<p>The Toowoomba Second Range Crossing is the <strong>largest Commonwealth government commitment<\/strong> to a single road project in Queensland&#8217;s history.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Nexus Infrastructure\" href=\"http:\/\/nexustsrc.com.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"dofollow noopener\">Nexus Infrastructure,<\/a> a consortium formed by Ferrovial through its subsidiary, <a title=\"Cintra\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ferrovial.com\/en\/business-lines\/toll-roads\/about-cintra\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"dofollow noopener\">Cintra, <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/plenarygroup.com\/\">Plenary Group<\/a> and <a title=\"Acciona\" href=\"https:\/\/www.acciona.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Acciona<\/a> was awarded the project in August 2015, with <a title=\"Ferrovial Agroman\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ferrovial.com\/es\/lineas-de-negocio\/construccion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"dofollow noopener\">Ferrovial Agroman<\/a> and Acciona delivering the design and
