This section is one of the most complex of the high-speed Madrid-Galicia line because of the rugged landscape and the unspoilt nature of the area. So much so that building works have uncovered another site of some 20 nesting pairs of <a title=\"RSPB bird and wildlife guides\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rspb.org.uk\/birds-and-wildlife\/bird-and-wildlife-guides\/bird-a-z\/s\/sandmartin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"dofollow\">sand martins<\/a> in a sandy embankment.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Ferrovial Agroman\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ferrovial.com\/en\/business-lines\/construction\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"dofollow\">Ferrovial Agroman<\/a> is experienced in this type of situations, and works with the <a title=\"Spanish Ornithogical Society\" href=\"https:\/\/www.seo.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"dofollow\">Spanish Ornithological Society<\/a> (SEO\/BirdLife) to protect this species. With this aim in mind, the company has kept works within the vicinity of the colony to a minimum.<\/p>\n<p>This trans-Saharan migratory bird establishes its busy colonies almost exclusively on the embankments of rivers or gravel, where it digs tunnels for nesting. Populations are currently dropping, and the sand martin is now protected at an international level, having been added to the <a title=\"MAPAMA\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mapama.gob.es\/es\/biodiversidad\/temas\/conservacion-de-especies\/especies-proteccion-especial\/ce-proteccion-listado.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"dofollow\">List of Wild Species of Special Protection Regime<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Experience in the protection of the sand martin<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>This isn\u2019t the only case where Ferrovial Agroman has had to protect the sand martin. Previously, between 16 and 18 nests were found during renovation works at the San Quint\u00edn facilities of the <em>Guardia Civil <\/em>in Madrid, and <strong>some 20 pairs<\/strong> of these birds nested on an embankment during works on the high-speed rail link running along the Atlantic coastline, in the <strong>Riali\u00f1o-Padr\u00f3n section.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>These experiences and the work with SEO\/BirdLife have enabled the development of an <strong>action protocol<\/strong> and best practice guidance to be followed during the nesting season in construction projects.<\/p>\n
