{"id":6958,"date":"2017-11-13T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2017-11-12T23:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsroom.ferrovial.com\/news\/major-breakthrough-for-northern-line-extension-as-tunneling-machines-reach-final-destination\/"},"modified":"2022-12-21T09:25:24","modified_gmt":"2022-12-21T08:25:24","slug":"major-breakthrough-for-northern-line-extension-as-tunneling-machines-reach-final-destination","status":"publish","type":"new","link":"https:\/\/newsroom.ferrovial.com\/en\/news\/major-breakthrough-for-northern-line-extension-as-tunneling-machines-reach-final-destination\/","title":{"rendered":"Major breakthrough for Northern Line Extension as tunneling machines reach final destination"},"content":{"rendered":"    <section class=\"wysiwyg text-editor \" id=\"\">\n        <div class=\"container container--narrow container--p-10\">\n            <p><em><a title=\"Ferrovial Agroman\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ferrovial.com\/en\/business-lines\/construction\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"dofollow noopener\">Ferrovial Agroman<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"Laing O'Rourke\" href=\"http:\/\/www.laingorourke.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Laing O\u2019Rourke<\/a> and JV FLO have completed tunneling work on the Northern Line Extension as boring machines break through at Kennington.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The <a title=\"London underground Northern Line iron rings\" href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.ferrovial.com\/en\/news\/last-spheroidal-graphite-iron-rings-installed-at-step-plate-junctions-at-northern-line-london-underground\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"dofollow noopener\"> <strong>Northern Line Extension<\/strong> <\/a>reached a major milestone today with the completion of tunneling work.\u00a0Huge tunnel boring machine, Amy, broke through at Kennington today, which means that the <strong>two 3.2km tunnels<\/strong> from Battersea Power Station, via Nine Elms, have now been built.<\/p>\n<p>Since their launch in the spring, <strong>Helen<\/strong> and sister tunneling machine <strong>Amy<\/strong> have been working around the clock to create the north and southbound tunnels that will extend the Charing Cross branch of the Northern line.\u00a0The project is the first major extension to a <a title=\"Extension Tube line of London\" href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.ferrovial.com\/en\/press_releases\/london-underground-northern-line-extension\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"dofollow noopener\"> <strong>Tube line<\/strong><\/a> since the Jubilee line in the late 1990s.<\/p>\n<p>It will add vital new capacity to the Capital\u2019s transport network, bringing Battersea and surrounding areas to within <strong>15 minutes<\/strong> of the City and West End. It will also enable the regeneration of the <strong>Vauxhall<\/strong>,<strong> Nine Elms<\/strong> and <strong>Battersea<\/strong> areas, spurring economic growth by supporting around <strong>25,000 new jobs<\/strong> and more than <strong>20,000 new homes<\/strong>. In addition, the construction of the extension is boosting the UK economy and supporting around <strong>1,000 jobs<\/strong>, including around <strong>50 apprenticeships<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cToday\u2019s breakthrough is a momentous moment for a project that is going to bring huge benefits to south London. The Northern Line Extension is not only going to make travelling to Battersea and Nine Elms easier, it\u2019s also going to bring tens of thousands of new jobs and homes to the area. It\u2019s another great example of why new infrastructure is so vital to London\u2019s success and the wider economy.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Ignacio Clopes, International Director Europe Asia Australia, Ferrovial Agroman, said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cToday\u2019s milestone further deepens the positive legacy and impact Ferrovial Agroman is having on London\u2019s transport network. This includes key roles in the delivery of Crossrail, Heathrow and now the much anticipated Northern Line Extension. We are delighted to be part of London\u2019s transformational future together with the prestigious bodies providing solutions for the capital and its communities.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>A conveyor system was used to take more than <strong>300,000 tonnes<\/strong> of excavated earth to barges on the River Thames where it was transported to Goshems Farm in East Tilbury, Essex, saving thousands of lorry journeys from the capital\u2019s roads. The earth has been used to create arable farmland.<\/p>\n<p>The cutter head of both machines will now be lifted by crane out of the shafts at Kennington while the rest of the machines will travel back to Battersea and be lifted, in parts, out of the ground there.<\/p>\n<p>Work on the new stations at Battersea and Nine Elms is progressing well. Services on the Northern line have continued uninterrupted while the work has taken place.<\/p>\n        <\/div>\n
