{"id":6963,"date":"2017-11-14T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2017-11-14T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsroom.ferrovial.com\/news\/amey-uses-wearable-tech-to-improve-workplace-safety\/"},"modified":"2022-12-21T09:25:21","modified_gmt":"2022-12-21T08:25:21","slug":"amey-uses-wearable-tech-to-improve-workplace-safety","status":"publish","type":"new","link":"https:\/\/newsroom.ferrovial.com\/en\/news\/amey-uses-wearable-tech-to-improve-workplace-safety\/","title":{"rendered":"Amey uses wearable tech to improve workplace safety"},"content":{"rendered":"    <section class=\"wysiwyg text-editor \" id=\"\">\n        <div class=\"container container--narrow container--p-10\">\n            <p>Road maintenance workers in north-east England <a title=\"Amey News\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amey.co.uk\/media\/press-releases\/2017\/october\/amey-proves-wearable-safety-tech-for-highways-workers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"> took part in an 8-week project<\/a> in which they wore a number of <strong>biometric and location sensors<\/strong> to monitor their physical activity and surroundings.<\/p>\n<p>The sensors, developed by <a title=\"Fujitsu\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fujitsu.com\/global\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"dofollow noopener\"> Fujitsu<\/a>, consist of a <strong>bracelet<\/strong> that measures the wearer&#8217;s<strong> vital signs<\/strong> and compiles <strong>environmental information<\/strong>, a <strong>collar<\/strong> that detects <strong>signs of drowsiness<\/strong> and an <strong>ear clip<\/strong> that measures <strong>blood flow<\/strong> and can detect <strong>signs of stress and fatigue<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Road maintenance crews are exposed to high-risk work environments. They work alongside traffic, in adverse weather conditions and in hard-to-access areas; furthermore, they all drive, which adds an element of fatigue.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the monitoring equipment, each employee wore a device enabling them to be <strong>located in case of risk<\/strong>. The device includes an <strong>alert button<\/strong> which relays the worker&#8217;s precise location if he or she presses it to request assistance.<\/p>\n<p>The pilot test results were highly satisfactory, and <a title=\"Ferrovial in United Kingdom\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ferrovial.com\/en\/business-lines\/ferrovial-services\/about-ferrovial-services\/ferrovial-services-united-kingdom\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"dofollow noopener\"> Amey <\/a>has started to consider the possibilities offered by this type of technology for use by workers in the rest of its business units as a means of improving workplace safety.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Commitment to workplace safety<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This project comes on the heels of one <a title=\"Improve safety and wellbeing of waste team\" href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.ferrovial.com\/en\/news\/amey-trials-new-schemes-to-help-improve-safety-and-wellbeing-of-waste-teams\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"dofollow noopener\"> implemented a few months ago in Wolverhampton<\/a>. For 10 days, a total of 28 volunteers in the refuse collection service wore smart vests to monitor a range of health parameters: heart rate, breathing, steps, posture and stress.
