The Spanish Ministry for Agriculture, Fisheries, Food and the Environment<\/a> has included the Murcia Street Cleaning and Waste Management Services<\/a> contract, managed by Ferrovial Services<\/a>, in the Carbon Footprint<\/a> Register<\/strong> in recognition of its efforts to combat climate change<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The award of this certification is a boost for the sustainability targets set by Ferrovial Services and the Murcia Town Council in their commitment to cut greenhouse gas emissions<\/strong> and achieve greater energy efficiency<\/strong>, working together to enhance environmental management.<\/p>\n

The carbon footprint is an environmental indicator which measures the impact of certain activities through their CO2 <\/sub>emissions; in other words, it is the mark left on the environment by each greenhouse gas emitting activity.<\/p>\n

Ferrovial Services\u2019 commitment to the environment<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Ferrovial Services is working together with the Murcia Town Council to measure the CO2<\/sub><\/strong> emissions from council buildings and services, as a first step for curbing such emissions and enabling a low carbon society<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In order to achieve such objectives, the new street cleaning and waste management vehicles incorporated into the contract fleet comply with all the required environmental criteria and are more efficient<\/strong> and more environmentally friendly<\/strong>. A total of nine gas-powered side loading waste collectors, an electric street sweeper, four electric mopping vehicles, two electrical waste points, an electric vacuum vehicle, 13 electric transport vehicles and 20 hybrid inspection vehicles have been acquired.<\/p>\n

The Ca\u00f1ada Hermosa<\/a> waste treatment centre, which receives the waste generated on a daily basis by the residents of Murcia, has been committed to the sustainability challenge from the outset. Evidence of this is its biogas plant<\/strong>, which receives methane produced through the anaerobic digestion of waste deposited in a controlled landfill, thus avoiding emissions<\/strong> to the atmosphere and also adding value to the gas<\/strong>, which is turned into energy<\/strong> to supply not only the entire waste treatment centre, but also the city, through its connection to the electricity grid.<\/p>\n

This waste treatment centre also has a biomethanation<\/strong> plant for decomposing organic waste, and the biogas obtained is also given added value through various additional processes.<\/p>\n
