The higher passenger numbers\u00a0have been primarily driven by an increase in the number of flights taking off and landing at the airport due to a scheme launched late\u00a0in\u00a02017.<\/p>\n<p>53% of passengers embarked on long haul flights with notable growth on routes to Saudi Arabia and Israel. 41% of passengers travelled on European flights with Madrid, Barcelona and Istanbul seeing a\u00a0notable\u00a0increase. Domestic flights within the UK made up 6% of passenger numbers,\u00a0reflecting Heathrow\u2019s domestic flight discount and the additional service being offered by\u00a0Flybe\u00a0to Scotland.<\/p>\n<p>The increase in passenger numbers follow\u00a0a number of awards\u00a0recognising\u00a0the quality of the airport. Heathrow\u2019s Terminal 2 was awarded\u00a0<a title=\"T2 Voted Best Terminal in the World - Ferrovial\" href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.ferrovial.com\/en\/news\/heathrows-t2-voted-best-terminal-in-the-world\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"dofollow noopener\"><i>Best Airport Terminal in the World<\/i><\/a>\u00a0for the first time, while the airport also received the title of\u00a0<i>Best Airport in Western Europe<\/i>\u00a0and the\u00a0<a title=\"Things to Know Before Travelling from Heathrow - Ferrovial Blog\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.ferrovial.com\/en\/2018\/02\/things-to-know-before-travelling-from-heathrow-airport\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"dofollow noopener\"><i>Best Airport in the World for Shopping<\/i><\/a>\u00a0for the ninth consecutive year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Passenger satisfaction is also at record levels<\/strong> with a record ASQ score of 4.20\/5. 84% of passengers surveyed rated\u00a0their Heathrow experience as \u2018Very Good\u2019 or \u2018Excellent\u2019.<\/p>\n<h2><b>Financial Results<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Revenue grew by 3.8%<\/strong> in the first quarter of 2018 thanks to a continued growth in retail income as well as a strong traffic performance. <strong>Retail growth of 5.2%<\/strong> was led by retail concessions and catering. The retail concessions were also boosted by a higher retail spend per participating passenger.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Aeronautical income grew by 3.1%<\/strong> boosted by strong traffic growth and increased headline tariffs while revenue growth from other sources was driven by regulated charges and property rents resulting from higher utility consumption. Heathrow Express revenue was flat as the airport transitions from a yield to a volume strategy.<\/p>\n<p>Operational expenses before depreciation and\u00a0amortisation\u00a0increased by 1.8% due in large part to\u00a0the provision of a\u00a0limited disruption during one of the worst winters in recent years.\u00a0\u00a0Other costs also increased as the airport ramps up expansion related costs.
