Collaborative initiative aims to reduce traffic-related incidents and fatalities among young drivers through data-driven strategies and education programs
Safety on the road is a priority and responsibility, and it starts with young drivers. For the second consecutive year, Ferrovial is the sole infrastructure partner of the Teens in the Driver Seat (TDS) program, a nationally recognized initiative, to train and empower young drivers to make safer choices behind the wheel.
“Partnering with TDS reflects Ferrovial’s broader mission to improve quality of life through better infrastructure. We’re not only building safer roads, we’re also empowering teenagers to make safer driving choices,” said Andrés Sacristán, CEO of Cintra, a Ferrovial company.
“Every year, thousands of young drivers are injured or killed in crashes that could have been prevented. Our mission is to change that reality by giving teens the tools, confidence, and peer support to make safer choices,” said Lisa Minjares-Kyle, program manager of the Youth Transportation Safety program at the Texas A&M Transportation Institute, home to the TDS program. “Ferrovial’s continued support allows us to reach even more schools and communities, expanding life-saving education to the next generation of drivers.”
Ferrovial’s sponsorship will support the program’s launch in 25 new school initiatives across the country, bringing critical safety lessons to thousands of teens. In addition to expanding the program’s reach, the partnership supports key components that reinforce safe driving behavior, like the All-Star Awards and You in the Driver’s Seat, a mobile app that rewards teens for avoiding distractions and speeding.
The program includes local outreach efforts in the communities served by Ferrovial’s express lanes in the U.S., with regular events in Dallas-Fort Worth near its TEXpress Lanes. These initiatives bring safety education directly to fast-growing communities with rising traffic.
Ferrovial is also developing immersive virtual reality (VR) technology aimed at educating young drivers on the importance of roadway attentiveness and responsible driving behavior. This innovative initiative aims to enhance driver awareness while also serving as a valuable tool for research and training. By addressing the disproportionate number of roadway incidents involving young drivers, the program supports broader efforts to safeguard road users and protect maintenance crews working in high-risk environments.
“This collaboration exemplifies our leadership in transportation innovation and our long-term commitment to investing in the vitality of our communities,” said Sacristán.
