Ferrovial, a pioneer in the use of autonomous machinery for airport construction

Ferrovial, a leading global infrastructure company, is strengthening its commitment to cutting-edge innovation by implementing technologies capable of automating critical tasks on construction sites. The company, through its Construction business unit, is using autonomous machinery and advanced control systems for the first time in the construction of the new runway at Rafael Hernández International Airport in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico.

The $239 million dollars project involves the construction of a new runway measuring 3,350 meters in length and 46 meters in width, without interrupting airport operations. To carry out the project, Ferrovial has deployed three compaction rollers that have been technologically adapted to operate autonomously, under the supervision of a single operator. This solution enables the rollers to perform multiple passes within a previously defined area, following planned trajectories.

The automation of the machinery allows continuous and precise control of each compaction phase, while helping improve productivity by reducing downtime typically associated with manual operations.

One of the key advantages offered by this technology is the ability for a single operator to supervise several machines operating simultaneously. This model facilitates more efficient management of resources on-site and paves the way for new ways of working in which coordination between people and autonomous machinery will become increasingly relevant.

By incorporating AI-powered vision systems and obstacle detection technology, the company is further enhancing safety across its operations. With this technology, machinery can automatically stop when people or vehicles are detected, reducing the risk of incidents in high-activity work areas.

As these technologies evolve, an increase in collaborative models among construction companies, regulatory agencies, and technology providers is expected, with the goal of creating common standards and accelerating large-scale adoption across the industry.
