EDAR de Utebo en Zaragoza - Cadagua

The Hazitek program is part of the Department of Economic Development, Sustainability, and Environment in the Basque Government’s Vice-Ministry of Technology, Innovation, and Digital Transformation. It has approved a subsidy for Cadagua’s ENANPA project under the Hazitek program, which receives funds from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

The goal of the ENANPA project is to demonstrate the technical feasibility of using the Partial-Anammox Nitritation process as an alternative method for reducing nitrogen in sewage treatment plants. This would allow improving the quality of the effluent with the lowest possible carbon footprint. This innovative technology is based on the separation and optimization of biological processes.

The proposal spans the dual scientific and technological character of an important innovative aspect. As an industrial research and development project, its technological purpose is evident as shown in:

  • Improving the WWTP’s effluent quality in terms of nitrogen concentration
  • Lowering the facility’s energy needs by reducing the oxygen supply to the system
  • Reducing the carbon footprint by lowering GHG emissions due to the energy required for the process
  • Improving the facilities’ energy efficiency
  • Contributing to the circular economy by reducing sludge production
