I-66 Outside the Beltway in Virginia reaches 91% completion

The FAM Construction team working on the I-66 Outside the Beltway project in northern Virginia has made incredible strides as it progresses toward the early opening this fall of new I-66 Express lanes along a 9-mile stretch of the 22.5-mile project corridor.

The team has logged over 11 million hours worked and has reached almost 91% completion on the project, which is located just outside of Washington, D.C. The early opening of the Express lanes will bring more reliable travel times and congestion relief in the western-most part of the corridor, which is also one of the most congested areas of the project.

Construction continues to advance in the remaining segments of the corridor. As of June, the I-66 team, led by Ferrovial Construction and Cintra, has:

  • Redesigned 12 interchanges
  • Constructed 63 bridges
  • Built 3.4 million square feet of walls
  • Laid over 1.9 million tons of asphalt, with over one million tons laid in 2021 alone – a record!

The team has achieved these milestones all while maintaining traffic in the corridor for an average 200,000 vehicles per day.

Successfully rebuilding a corridor of this size and scope in a major metropolitan area is a tribute to the meticulous, daily coordination among the I-66 team, hundreds of local and regional subcontractors and suppliers, and the Virginia Department of Transportation.
