Ferrovial, which already manages the Scut del Algarve motorway in Portugal, strengthens its position in Portuguese transport infrastructure concessions, with nearly 250 km of shadow toll motorways.
Through Cintra, Ferrovial already manages 18 toll motorways in Spain, Portugal, Chile, Colombia and Canada and is the world leader in concessions in terms of volume of investment (1.3 billion euros).
Through Cintra, the company that channels bidding and management of transport infrastructure concessions in Spain and abroad, Ferrovial has obtained its second concession in Portugal: the 113 km Scut do Norte Litoral motorway that links the city of Oporto with Caminha, near the border with Spain. The project involves an investment of 330 million euros (nearly Ptas 55 billion) and the duration of the concession, under the shadow toll regime, is of 30 years.
Management of 250 km of motorway in Portugal
The consortium that won the Scut del Algrave concession is led by Cintra (Ferrovial), with a 79% stake, in conjunction with a group of local firms, under the name of Constructores del Norte, which own 21%. Cintra already manages the Scut del Algarve motorway in the south of Portugal and this new concession implies that it consolidates its position in the concession sector in Portugal and manages nearly 250 km of shadow toll motorway (the State pays a toll for every vehicle that uses the motorway).
The motorway, located in the north of Portugal, is 113 km in length. Of this, 41 km are to be built, while the remaining 72 km are to be maintained and conserved. The motorway, which will have three service areas and two maintenance centers, will foreseeably come on stream towards the middle of 2005.
The Scut do Norte Litoral is on the South-North coastal axis that will provide a rapid link between the cities of Oporto and Caminha, near the border with Spain, apart from directly competing with the current A3 motorway (Porto-Valença) in long-distance traffic.
World leaders in terms of the volume of investment in concessions
Ferrovial, through Cintra, is the world leader in private transport infrastructure development (motorways, airports and car parks), with thirty years experience and investment commitments in excess of 1.3 billion euros.
With this new contract in Portugal, through Cintra, Ferrovial already manages 18 toll motorways in Spain, Portugal, Chile, Colombia and Canada, where the ETR 407 Toronto motorway is to be found, with an investment in excess of 2.4 billion euros.
Ferrovial also manages 12 airports in the United States (Niagara), Mexico, Chile and England Bristol airport which it owns- and is already the leader in the domestic car park development market, with over 135,000 spaces.
