Ferrovial, through its subsidiary Cintra, which channels the bidding and management of transport infrastructure concessions in Spain and abroad, has won the Scut del Algarve Concession in Portugal. The project represents an investment of over Ptas 38 billion and the duration of the concession and maintenance, under the shadow toll regime (Scut), is of 30 years.
The consortium that won the Scut del Algarve Concession is led by Cintra (Ferrovial), with 79%. A group of local firms, under the name of Constructores del Norte, has a 21% stake.
The motorway, located in the south of Portugal, is 127 km in length. Of this, 39 km are to be built, together with 17 km of link roads to join up with the rest of the highway network. The motorway will foreseeably come on stream at the end of the year 2002.
The Scut del Algarve is on the East-West axis that links the south of Portugal. It runs parallel to the coast, at some 15-20 km distance, serves all the coastal towns, which will benefit from this improvement in communications, and will re-route long-distance traffic. The motorway will have five service areas, located in Guadiana, Tavira, Boliquime, Porches and Lagos.
Investment of Ptas 180 billion earmarked for concessions
Ferrovial, through Cintra, is one of the world leaders in the area of private transport infrastructure development, and has thirty years experience and an investment assigned to transport concessions (motorways, airports and car parks) in excess of Ptas 180 billion.
With this contract in Portugal, Ferrovial -through its subsdiary Cintra- already runs 16 motorways in Spain (Europistas, Eurovias, Autema, Autopista del Sol, Estepona-Guadiaro, M-45 and Túnel de Artxanda), 4 in Chile, 3 in Colombia and the Toronto H407 highway in Canada, which represents an investment of over Ptas 400 billion.
Cintra also has the concession for 11 airports in the United States (Niagara), Mexico and Chile and is the Spanish leader in car park development, with a total of 115,000 parking spaces in Spain, Portugal and Puerto Rico.
