Cespa, a company in the services division, centralises Ferrovial´s urban services and industrial waste management businesses
Ferrovial has appointed José Gual Balmanya as the new General Manager of Cespa. Gual will join Cespa on 1 June. Until then, he will remain as General Manager of the Barcelona Trade Fair -a position he has occupied since October 2000.
Cespa, part of Ferrovial´s services division, which is managed by Íñigo Meirás, pools the group´s urban services activities: it is one of Spain´s leading companies in street cleaning, municipal solid waste collection and treatment, and gardening, and it is Spain´s leading industrial waste management and treatment company.
Ferrovial´s urban services division currently covers a total of 600 municipalities, including A Coruña, Alicante, East Barcelona, Granada, Huelva, Madrid (several districts), Murcia, Pontevedra, Vigo, Vitoria and Zamora. It also maintains 27 million square metres of green areas and manages over 30 landfills.
It is present throughout Spain and in Portugal, Cespa´s headquarters will remain in Barcelona.
Services, a strategic market for Ferrovial
Services are a strategic activity for Ferrovial due to their growth potential, stable earnings and long-term contracts. Since the mid-1990s, Ferrovial´s strategy has focused on growth in three business lines: urban services, facility management and infrastructure maintenance.
The acquisitions in 2003 (Cespa in Spain and Amey in the UK) have given the final push to Ferrovial becoming a leading services company, with projected revenues of over 2 billion euros in 2004.
Ferrovial in Cataluña
Ferrovial has performed its four strategic activities -construction, infrastructure, real estate and services- in Cataluña for decades.
In construction, a consortium involving Ferrovial is developing the Barcelona-L´Hospitalet de Llobregat Courthouse Complex, Spain´s first PFI (private finance initiative). It is also constructing other buildings (including the Cataluña Conference Hall for the 2004 Forum of Cultures and the Med Dolce hotel in Sitges) and performing other work at El Prat airport, Barcelona Metro, Barcelona port (extension of the east pier) and other waterworks. It is also currently finalising the extension of the Palau de la Música Catalana.
In infrastructure, Ferrovial manages the Terrassa-Manresa toll road and 10,600 parking spaces. In real estate, Ferrovial is selling over 500 homes in Cataluña and it is present in the realty brokerage market through the Don Piso network of company-owned offices and franchises (95 offices in Cataluña).
In services, Ferrovial has gardening, street cleaning and solid waste collection contracts in Valls and Tortosa (Tarragona) and gardening contracts in Badalona, L´Hospitalet and Lleida. In facility management, it maintains the installations of the Pirelli factory in Manresa, EDS in Barcelona and the Cataluña primary healthcare centres, and manages the cleaning of the Post Office premises. In infrastructure maintenance, Ferrovial manages the special traffic, planning and regulation measures for the Catalan Traffic Service.
