At the 23rd edition of the awards organised by
Actualidad Económica, seeking to spotlight the most brilliant, useful and innovative products and services launched in 2014, the Murcia Environmental and Renewable Energies Cluster, a project run by
Ferrovial Services and the Murcia Council, was honoured as one of the country's most sustainable ideas.
The award ceremony was attended by Ignacio Gastón, General Manager of
Ferrovial Services Spain, along with Miguel Ángel Cámara, Mayor of Murcia, and José Ros, Councillor for Street Cleaning and Waste Management.
A pioneering initiative in Europe
Located at the Cañada Hermosa Treatment Centre, the environmental cluster - a pioneering initiative in Europe - was set up to
bring together numerous businesses and partnerships involved in environmental quality, energy efficiency research and innovation in waste treatment and reuse.
Key projects underway include construction of a biomethanation plant to generate biogas from the waste produced in the process of brewing beer.
The Cañada Hermosa Treatment Centre has established Murcia
a benchmark and an international standard-bearer for waste management, both in terms of waste recovery and the different treatments that waste generated in the municipality is subject to.
