The Al Ghubrah desalination plant in Oman

Al Ghubrah SWRO desalination plant achieved last February commercial operation after successful completion of the 30 day period acceptance tests in the first trial.

The plant has proved to deliver the nominal capacity of 191.000 m3/d meeting challenging technical and operation requirements. Since the start-up in last June, the plant delivered more than 20 million m3 of water to the Public Authority for Electricity & Water. Quite a challenge, as the technical and operational requirements demanded of the plant can be classed as the most stringent within the desalination sector worldwide.

Design, construction and commissioning of the plant by the Cadagua-led consortium have cost a total of USD 215 million. The project, which uses inverse osmosis technology, has the capacity to produce 191,000 cubic metres of drinking water per day, to serve a population of 700,000 in the Muscat metropolitan area. The plant will provide drinking water to meet the growing demand in the region, and will take over from some older plants which no longer work efficiently.

The plant has overcome some significant milestones during construction. However some of these, such as reaching 3 million work hours without lost time incidents (LTI), and the maintenance of excellent safety conditions throughout the project, were the most celebrated by the more than 2000 workers. They also show the unquestionable commitment of Cadagua to security.

Cadagua has been involved in a large number of projects in the Gulf area, the most important of which are the desalination plant in Medina Yanbu (Saudi Arabia); a sewage treatment plant in Darsait (Oman); and the Al Zawrah desalination plant in Ajman (United Arab Emirates).

Cadagua has designed and constructed over 235 water treatment plants with a capacity to supply over 21 million people.
