The
Centre of Innovation and Intelligent Infrastructures (CI3) has participated in the official presentation of the
SMairT environmental monitoring system in the city of Guadalajara, this method will allow citizens to obtain data about the quality of the air they breathe in real time. CI3 is a foundation created to support the development of Ferrovial’s
Innovation environment. Besides,
Alcalá de Henares University and
Junta of Castilla-La Mancha are also part of CI3.
Environmental monitoring system SMairT
SMairT is an
environmental monitoring system which enables knowing about
air quality indexes and
creating a data cloud to control atmospheric pollution. This is done by using
low cost devices that are spread all over the city. The first pilot has been developed by CI3 in Guadalajara with the contribution of the University of Alcalá Electronics Department. The data from the weather station next to Junta de Comunidades has been taken as a reference to
calibrate the sensors.
The development of this system, regarding
hardware, software and firmware, has been framed into the innovation project with the same name. Such project consists on the implementation and display of
three environmental parameters measuring stations, which are located in
Pescadores and
Ramón y Cajal streets in the city of Guadalajara.
Each of the SMairT stations includes
environmental sensors which allow
monitoring of sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), carbon monoxide (CO), ozone (O3) and
particles in suspension (PM10). Moreover, the measuring points establish communication among themselves through
6LoWPAN,
Internet of Things protocol, by using the wireless network from sensors implemented within the frame of the
SIMENON project.
SMairT offers citizens real time information about the
quality of the air they breathe in the area selected for the display. Such information can be obtained through the
project website, and also at the citizen information board, located at the Cultural Axis of the city. This board, through the code of colors established by the Air Quality Index (ICA), provides the citizen with the level of each parameter that is monitored (good, acceptable, deficient or bad).
Living Lab Guadalajara
The SMairT system is part of the range of projects displayed by CI3 within the open innovation space (Living Lab) created in Guadalajara due to the agreement signed in 2013 with the municipal consistory. More information about the projects displayed by CI3 in Guadalajara’s Living Lab can be found in
this video.
