May’s Royal Wedding gave Heathrow Airport a 3.1% surge in passenger numbers as visitors from across the globe travelled to nearby Windsor for a glimpse of the newly wedded royals.
Passenger numbers on North American flights arriving to the UK’s hub airport grew 5% during the month of May as many US visitors hopped the pond to take part in the celebrations. Domestic flights also increased by 5.5% with more passengers filling flights to Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Leeds.
The increased passenger numbers were supported by a record 22nd consecutive month of cargo growth. Over 144,000 metric tonnes of cargo passed through Heathrow in May.
The increased traffic comes at a time when the UK Parliament has voted in favour of the Heathrow expansion project. On the expansion, Heathrow’s CEO John Holland Kaye commented that:
“We have a robust plan to expand Britain’s hub airport, unlocking billions in growth and creating tens of thousands of new skilled jobs – from Plymouth to Perth and Swansea to Southend.”
