Ferrovial BIM Seminar I

The invitation to key representatives from all of the group’s companies – Amey, BAA, Cintra and Ferrovial Agroman – to London to discuss the benefits and practicalities of BIM implementation (Building Information Modeling) across the businesses was prompted by the UK government’s plans for compulsory BIM implementation in public projects by 2016.

The Ferrovial Group represents an ideal scenario for the analysis and implementation of BIM (Building Information Modelling). The range of business activities which form Ferrovial completes the lifecycle of infrastructures and buildings – from the design and construction phases through to maintenance and operation. The use of 3D models incorporating the necessary parameters and information for each stage of a building’s life will facilitate the live sharing and modification of such details: the very foundation of BIM.

The theme of sharing, collaboration and real-time innovation were at the very heart of this first seminar. Mr Mark Bew, Chairman, Government Industry BIM Working Group began the series of presentations with an overview of the HMG Government BIM Strategy. Autodesk and Bentley explained the possibilities for and case studies of BIM implementation from the perspective of leading software providers. The second part of the seminar focussed on gaining an understanding of the stage each sister company is currently at regarding BIM implementation, what our needs are as a group, and the challenges we face.

The event concluded with a panel discussion led by Ignacio Gaston, Construction Director GB, Ferrovial Agroman, in which the future of BIM was discussed.

A key message which ran throughout the event was that BIM is not merely a software package. BIM is a cultural change and one which represents collaboration, efficiency and access to information. With that in mind, this first seminar solidifies our position as BIM thinkers of the calibre who are already looking at how to embrace the change by making this very change work for us.

We are looking forward to working together to maintain this collaborative platform for the proposal, analysis and implementation of new and innovative initiatives for the continued improvement and success of Ferrovial.
