Construction included four independent treatment plants with prolonged aeration technology
Given the need to comply with European regulations on water purification, a series of Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTPs) have been built. These are part of the Hydrographic Confederation of the Tagus, and the plants in the Hervás Agrarian Region stand out in this group. Many of the municipalities in this region located in the north of Cáceres did not have the facilities needed to ensure purification at the levels needed.
The WWTPs built by the joint venture between Ferrovial Construction and Cadagua stand out among those recently built for this package in the area. These are located in Ahigal, La Granja, Mohedas de Granadilla, and Zarza de Granadilla.
Construction included four independent treatment plants with prolonged aeration technology.
Each of the four treatment plants connects with the municipalities’ existing sewer system, where a spillway has been added to ensure the separation of flows. This enables treating ten times the average summer flow of each one, redirecting the rest (stormwater) to irrigation.
A total of 1,200 m of PVC pipes 400 mm in diameter have been laid to direct sewage to the proper WWTP. They’re set at slopes ranging from 0.3% to 3%.
The electricity supply is at medium voltage. A total of 2,600 m is derived from powerlines, and each WWTP has a 160 kVA transformer.
The most important characteristics of each one are listed below.
Ahigal:
- Population equivalent: 3,115 inhabitant
- Average flow: 29.85 m3/h
- Pretreatment with compact equipment
- Carousel biological reactor with a removable diffuser grid
La Granja:
- Population equivalent: 672 inhabitants
- Average flow: 6.44 m3/h

Mohedas de Granadilla:
- Population equivalent: 2,070 inhabitants
- Average flow: 19.84 m3/h

Zarza de Granadilla:
- Population equivalent: 3,344 inhabitants
- Average flow: 32.04 m3/h
- Pretreatment with compact equipment
