I-77 Mobility Partners opened the northern portion of I-77 Express to traffic on June 1, providing drivers a useful travel alternative in the Lake Norman region.
In the first 30 days of operation (June 1-June 30), thousands of drivers have benefited from improved speeds and travel times. Since opening, motorists are embracing the new express lanes and have expressed positive feedback on their I-77 Express experiences.
I-77 Express has improved speed across the entire corridor. Since opening, average speeds in the corridor during the morning peak travel period have increased by 18 percent, and speeds during the afternoon peak travel period have increased by 37 percent, when compared to pre-opening speeds (peak travel periods are from 6:30 AM to 9:00 AM and from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM). Though the express lanes provide the fastest speeds and shortest driving times in the corridor, these travel improvements have impacted both express and general purpose lanes.
Using the Lanes
Drivers can take a virtual ride on I-77 Express by visiting www.i77express.com.
The portion that is currently open provides drivers with the option to travel on 15 miles of express lanes between Hambright Road in Huntersville and Exit 36 in Mooresville. With five different segments in each direction, and numerous points of entry and exit, drivers have the option to use as little or as much of the express lanes as they choose.
Customers currently receive a promotional rate, which is an average 25 percent rate off toll rates until the full opening of I-77 Express. The toll rates displayed on the toll rate signs for each segment of I-77 Express reflect the promotional rate. Customers can learn more about toll rates here.
Using a NC Quick Pass transponder is the fastest, easiest way to pay for tolls in North Carolina and other states that accept SunPass, Peach Pass and E-ZPass transponders. For customers without a NC Quick Pass, SunPass, Peach Pass or E-ZPass transponder, cameras capture an image of your vehicle’s license plate. NC Quick Pass then mails a bill to the vehicle’s registered owner through the Bill by Mail program.
