Heathrow is the place where the world meets. It has more international flights than any other airport - flying nearly
70 million people each year to over 180 destinations across the globe and serves two-thirds of all the UK's long-haul flights. However, many of its facilities had become outdated and were not living up to the standards that passengers rightly expect. Capacity constraints and out-of-date facilities meant the need for a major transformation plan.
Over the next few years almost the
entire airport will be rebuilt, refurbished or redesigned. Our vision for Heathrow is to make it a brand new airport, fit for the 21st century. A multi-billion pound investment plan is delivering world-class facilities, more space for security, and vastly improved environmental performance. In short, it's a plan to make Heathrow great by 2013.
