- First tunnelling project for Ferrovial Construction and Budimex in joint venture
Ferrovial, through its Construction division and its Polish subsidiary Budimex, has been awarded the Podleze-Gdow sections (F+J) of the new Podłęże– Piekiełko railway line in the Małopolskie region of Poland. Estimated at 2.58 billion PLN (€604 million) the package is among the most complex civil engineering projects in Poland’s national rail programme.
This award marks a significant milestone in Ferrovial’s strategic positioning in Central Europe and represents the first-ever tunnelling joint venture between Ferrovial Construction and Budimex, Poland’s leading construction company.
The contract was awarded by PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe S.A., the public entity responsible for maintaining, modernizing, and operating more than 95% of the country’s railway network. The new line forms part of one of Poland’s most important rail modernization initiatives, enhancing regional mobility and strengthening connections from Kraków toward the south of the country.
Over the 46‑month programme, the consortium will deliver 17.5 km of new electrified double‑track railway, two parallel tunnels of approximately 900 m each, and an additional 1.9 km of electrified single track. Major structures include 39 bridges and viaducts, 24 culverts, 2 underpasses, 18 retaining walls, and extensive ground‑improvement works totalling more than 1,244 km of soil‑reinforcement columns and 112,500 m³ of structural concrete.
The Podłęże– Piekiełko railway line project reinforces Ferrovial’s position as a global reference in complex rail, tunnelling and mobility infrastructure, contributing to economic development and sustainable transportation in the markets where it operates.
