Ferrovial Services’ subsidiary Cespa is to manage the waste treatment plants in Salto del Negro and Juan Grande, on the island of Gran Canaria; the contracts together exceed 500 million euro. The two plants will service a total of more than 800,000 people. Cespa will equip the plants with the company’s pioneering technology, which harnesses landfill biogas for energy.
The Gran Canaria Island Council has awarded two contracts to manage the Salto del Negro and Juan Grande waste treatment plants to the joint venture comprising Cespa, Ferrovial Services’ municipal and environmental services subsidiary, and local company Ayaguares. The two contracts together exceed 500 million euro.
As part of its commitment to reducing CO2 emissions and minimizing environmental impact, Cespa will implement processes to harness landfill biogas for energy. In the last year, the company has avoided the emission of 900,000 tons of CO2 through the capture and use of biogas for electricity and heating. Both plants will be equipped with wind turbines and roof-top solar photovoltaic panels, among other technologies.

Salto del Negro: serving over 500,000 people
Cespa will build, operate and maintain the existing and planned works for this plant, which will serve more than 500,000 residents in 13 municipalities. The plant will treat close to 390,000 tons of waste each year. The 17.5-year contract is worth 240.5 million euro.
Juan Grande: a 19.5-year operating contract
The joint venture comprising Cespa and Ayaguares will build, operate and maintain the Juan Grande waste treatment plant for 19.5 years; the contract is valued at 261.7 million euro. When construction is completed in 2013, the plant will serve 8 municipalities with over 319,000 residents and will have an annual treatment capacity of close to 300,000 tons of waste.
Cespa: managing the recycling value chain
Cespa’s six biomethanization plants generate 12 million kWh of electricity, equivalent to the average annual electricity consumption of 2,700 households.The company produces 100,000 MWh of electricity from landfill biogas, 12,500 MWh from biomethanization, and 16,000 MWh from the energy-from-waste plant in Andorra. Cespa currently captures over 94 million Nm3 of biogas in Spain, which avoids over 900,000 tons of CO2 emissions to the atmosphere (equivalent to taking 650,000 cars off the road for one year). The company operates in Spain, Portugal, the UK and Andorra, providing services to more than 800 municipalities with close to 6 million people.
