ESSA and Unicaja acquire 49% of the Municipal Parking Lot and Services Company of Malaga The consortium formed by Estacionamientos Subterráneos (ESSA) and Unicaja has acquired 49% of Sociedad Municipal de Aparcamientos y Servicios de Málaga. SMASSA manages a total of 1,350 rotation and 1,700 above ground residential parking spaces (Blue Zone) in Malaga. The operation, valued at 1,250 million pesetas, includes future investment exceeding 1,700 million pesetas, to improve the existing parking lots, for construction of 2,000 new rotation parking spaces and extension and improvement of the Blue Zone. The inclusion of the private consortium in management of SMASSA will also allow improvement in operation of the existing parking lots, by providing latest generation control systems, automation of the payment service, interior sign posting in the parking lots, installation of a loudspeaker system and closed circuit television, integration of the rotation parking lots in the network, etc., in order to adapt the parking lot service to the growing demand in the City of Malaga. ESSA and its integration in Cintra ESSA has recently been integrated in Cintra, the company incorporated by the Ferrovial Group to tender and manage concessions of transport infrastructures, from motorways to parking lots, ports, airports, etc. ESSAs entry to Sociedad Municipal de Aparcamientos y Servicios de Málaga (SMASSA) reinforces the strategy designed by Cintra in the parking business, in which it aims to consolidate its leading position through an ambitious investment policy, through tendering and acquisition of new companies. ESSA concentrates its activity on concession of rotation parking lots and above ground regulated parking spaces (Blue Zone), after acquiring Dornier and, at present, fully manages more than 85,000 parking spaces in the main Spanish cities and Portugal.
