Ferrovial, the sustainable infrastructure and mobility company, and Renault Group, a pioneer in Europe in the production of electric cars, have expanded their Zity electric carsharing service to Italy. Zity is now operational in four European cities: Madrid, Paris, Lyon and Milan.
The carsharing service is scheduled to become operational in Milan in May using 450 units of the Dacia Spring, a 100% electric, four-seater car with a compact, simple and robust design. Zity currently has more than 560,000 registered users and a fleet of 1,425 all-electric cars.
More than 340,000 Milan residents report they are active users of shared mobility. The policies implemented by the Comune di Milano favor the emergence of intermodal transport proposals. In a recent Zity survey on shared mobility in Milan, 79% of respondents expressed concern about the environment, and 92% consider that they are up to date with the latest technology, fashion and trends. In addition, factors such as demographics and spending power make Milan the perfect city for Zity’s free floating carsharing model.
Ferrovial and Renault’s electric carsharing service has also pioneered technological developments in the area of innovation and safety. In this regard, its fleet in Milan will be part of the Onboard Safety Program, in which onboard telematic devices monitor driving in real time and warn users about potentially poor driving practices. This program, which was implemented on a pilot basis in Madrid in 2020, has reduced the accident rate in the city’s Zity fleet by 36%.
Ferrovial’s focus on shared mobility emphasizes its commitment to sustainability. Zity has avoided 1,988 tons of CO2 emissions into the atmosphere since its launch, and it uses only energy from renewable sources to recharge the fleet in all the cities where this is possible. In this connection, Ferrovial has purchased the right to build a photovoltaic plant in Seville, Spain, to supply power to its assets in Spain and Portugal in order to fulfil its 2030 emission reduction target.
