Ferrovial, a global leader in infrastructure solutions, presented the panel, “The Highway is Calling and Your Car is Answering” at South by Southwest (SXSW) on March 10, 2023. The panel discussed how real-time “conversations” between infrastructure and vehicles can change ground travel forever.

Pablo Ferrando, Head of Innovation and Revenue Research at Cintra, was joined by Jessica Robinson, Co-Founder and Partner at Assembly Ventures, and Elizabeth McGee, Public Sector Chief Strategy and Innovation Advisor at Intel, moderated the session.

The conversations from infrastructure to vehicles and between vehicles, really, the possibilities are endless. I think we’ll reach a point in which they’ll communicate effectively the exact information that other cars would need to operate and navigate our highways more safely.

The panelists addressed the collaboration needed to make these advanced roads accessible across the United States.

“On the vehicle side, they’ve now gotten to a point where the car has the technical capability just to talk to something, but a lot of that discussion so far has been from the car to its current automaker cloud,” said Jessica Robinson. “What does it look like to really have a robust conversation … That’s the point that we’re starting to get to now.”

“Once we figure out of all of these pilots which one brings the most efficient solution … let’s [let the government] set the rules, the standards, so that the entire industry can figure out what is the best way, the most efficient way to scale this up,” said Ferrando.
