Ferrovial’s president, Rafael de Pino, and Bishop Carlos Escribano from the Diocese of Calahorra and La Calzada-Logroño have signed a collaboration agreement for the restoration of the Crypt of Santo Domingo de La Calzada in time for celebrations for the Millennial Anniversary and the Saint’s Jubilee Year.
The company will contribute the sum of €20,000 to go towards restoration of the cathedral’s crypt where the Saint is laid to rest, as well as improving the lighting. The construction will take place during March and the first part of April 2019, the year that will include celebrations of the Millennial Anniversary of Santo Domingo de la Calzada, as well as the Jubilee Year given by the Holy See for the anniversary of a figure who was central to establishing the Camino de Santiago. Likewise, the Church incumbents designated Ferrovial’s president as a member of the Honor Committee, presided over by His Majesty the King.
Santo Domingo de La Calzada is known as the Camino’s engineer because he was a pioneer of the Jacobean route in the conception and construction of the various structures that can be found along the Camino de Santiago. During the signing ceremony for the agreement, Rafael del Pino remarked that:
"At Ferrovial, we are proud and honored to be able to collaborate on the restoration of the crypt."
He went on to add:
“The company employs many civil engineers, and so we have great admiration and respect for the Saint.”
The Saint’s Jubilee Year will run from April 25, 2019 to January 13, 2020. It will kick off with the opening of the cathedral’s Holy Door of Forgiveness and with a mass presided over by the president of the Spanish Episcopal Conference, Cardinal Ricardo Blázquez.
