Ferrovial’s Director of Innovation Rafael Fernández participated in the Cross-Industry Innovation Summit held by NASA at the Houston Space Center in Texas.
NASA, the U.S. government agency responsible for the civilian space program, held the fourth Cross Industry Innovation Summit on November 4-6. The summit brings 80 leaders together from around the world to discuss innovation in different business sectors.
Ferrovial’s role as a leading business in innovation
As the guest speaker, Rafael Fernández had the opportunity to share experiences and conversations about innovation applied to the aerospace, technology and mobility industries.
From Ferrovial, we shared a vision on the future of mobility and transportation infrastructure, offering a humanistic approach focused on the individual, based on the Life Radius concept, the range of action of a person´s day to day.
“It is odd to see, from today’s perspective, how our grandparents were born and met in a Spanish village, how our parents are then from different provinces, and how we are connected with people from all over the world. This is primarily due to developments in modes of transportation and infrastructure over the past 100 years”
“In this sense, and with the experience of managing mobility for more than 700 million people across Europe and North America through our infrastructures and services, we have a privileged perspective on the major challenges ahead in our sector”

- Major trends in mobility: sociodemographic factors, users, technology, and data.
- Mobility’s past: how the telegraph technology enabled developing railways.
- Mobility’s present: infrastructures and “CASE” (Connected, Autonomous, Shared, Electric) mobility, and its positive impact on
- Mobility’s future: the growth of Life Radius, a concept that will multiply many people’s typical radius of displacement by 6 or as much as 20 by using high-speed technologies such as the hyperloop, considerably reducing travel time. In the future the distance will not be measured in kilometers but in terms of cost and time.
