A second span of girders for the overpass bridge at the new Sancrox Road interchange is to be lifted into place from next Tuesday (10 March), marking another milestone in the $30 million project.
Federal Member for Lyne David Gillespie said the Sancrox interchange was the remaining component of the $110 million Pacific Highway – Oxley Highway to Kempsey planning and preconstruction project, which is a key component of the $1.05 billion Port Macquarie to Kempsey upgrade of the Pacific Highway.
"While major work on the intersection started in August 2014, motorists will see substantial progress in coming weeks when major components of the overpass are installed,"
The two bridge spans will be supported by 14 girders over the Pacific Highway. Each girder will be lifted from a truck into its final position on the bridge using a large crane and secured with temporary bracing.
Once in position, the bridge girders will be permanently secured, allowing construction of the bridge deck to begin.
New South Wales Member for Port Macquarie Leslie Williams said traffic would be diverted onto a temporary road during work on the second span of girders.
“The girders are expected to be installed by next Friday (13 March), and motorists can expect delays of up to five minutes when the girders are being moved.”
The new overpass bridge is located 600 metres south of the existing Sancrox Road intersection and work on the interchange is due to be completed by mid-2015.
The planning and preconstruction works are jointly funded, with the Australian Government committing $35 million and the New South Wales Government $75 million.
