Commitment to Safety in Sancrox Interchange Project

WorkCover NSW and Ferrovial Agroman have formally committed to ensuring the safety of workers during the construction of the Sancrox Road Interchange Project with the signing of an action plan.

WorkCover NSW and Ferrovial Agroman have formally committed to ensuring the safety of workers during the construction of the Sancrox Road Interchange Project with the signing of an action plan.

The Action Plan commits WorkCover and Ferrovial to developing practical and effective solutions to work health and safety, return to work and injury management throughout the duration of the project.

WorkCover’s Port Macquarie District Coordinator, Peter Barron said WorkCover was committed to working collaboratively with the public and private sector to ensure safety throughout the Pacific Highway Upgrade.

"Civil construction projects, including road works, require the management of significant hazards in a dynamic work environment,"

Between 1 July 2010 and 30 June 2012 there were 1,171 workers compensation claims in the road and bridge construction industry, including two fatalities, at an estimated cost of $9.8 million to the NSW workers compensation scheme.

This includes 122 injury claims in the industry on the NSW North Coast.

Common hazards on road construction projects include manual handling, falls on the same level and being hit by moving objects.

Mr Barron said WorkCover had a strong record of working collaboratively with the public sector and principal contractors over a long period of time to ensure road construction works are carried out in a safe, healthy and productive manner.

"Every worker should return home safely at the end of the working day and those on this project can be confident that all parties are working together for their safety,"
