Construction begins on I-35 NEX Central project in Texas

Local news

Construction of the I-35 Northeast (NEX) Central project has officially begun! This $1.5 billion Texas Clear Lanes project includes the design, build and maintenance of 9.5 miles of elevated lanes spanning multiple cities in the San Antonio, Texas, region. The team expects completion by December 2027.

Ferrovial Construction and Webber are partners in Alamo NEX Construction (ANC), the project’s design-build contractor. Texas Clear Lanes is a statewide strategic plan to provide congestion relief through non-tolled roads and is focused on the five major metro areas of Austin, Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston and San Antonio.

On the heels of the project groundbreaking in May, the ANC project team accomplished an important milestone, receiving approval of the first Released for Construction design package just 10 months after the Notice to Proceed. This allows construction of all the traffic management works and temporary works for a 1.5-mile segment along I-35 to begin, ultimately preparing the work zones and temporary elements for the construction of the viaduct in this area.

"The approval of designs and start of construction is made possible by the incredible design-build capabilities of Ferrovial and Webber. With over 200,000 travelers on this road daily, we know this project will have a tremendously positive impact on mobility in the region once it is completed."

Upcoming work through the fall includes restriping of I-35 to place a portable traffic median, installment of drill shafts, placement of bridge foundations and installment of the first bridge columns along southbound I-35.
