Cadagua is awarded a Pta 4 billion contract in China

Cadagua, a Grupo Ferrovial company, market leader in water treatment plant engineering, has been awarded the contract of the Potable Water Treatment Plant of the city of Nanjing, the former Chinese capital. The contract totals Pta 4 billion, of which Pta 1.2 billion are equipment and assistance.

Cadaguas contract involves the supply, assembly supervision and start-up of the electromechanical equipment of the Chengbei Water Treatment Plant. The plant will have a daily capacity of 250,000 m3 which may be doubled in the future and will allow supply to one million inhabitants, becoming the eighth supply plant in Nanjing, a city with a population of 6 million inhabitants.

The term of the contract ends at year-end while the start-up stage runs into May 1999. The project is financed through a soft loan awarded by the Spanish government to its Chinese counterpart, in the framework of the Development Aid Fund loans.

Drive towards international markets

In recent years, Cadagua has pushed forward three strategic business lines focused on growth of its services activities maintenance and operation -, private client promotion and international expansion.

In this sense, this contract the first achieved by the company in the water treatment Chinese market must be added to the works carried out by Cadagua mainly in Cyprus, Tunisia and Portugal.

Specifically, Cadagua is completing the sea water desalination plant in Dhekelia, Cyprus, the largest one built by the company for the time being, with a daily capacity of 40,000 m3 of desalinated water. In Tunisia, the construction of two salt water desalination plants in Djerba Island and Zarzis, on the southern area of the country, is well under way, while in Portugal Cadagua is carrying out a capacity increase in the water treatment system of the SN Longos Portuguese steel mill, in Porto.

Cadagua, with an experience of more than 25 years in the water market, is the first company to obtain a certificate according to ISO standard 9001 for construction and operation of water plants. In 1997, Cadaguas revenues were almost Pta 13 billion, 20% up on 1996, and its works backlog amounted to Pta 27 billion at year-end.

In Spain, among the most important contracts, we should highlight the recent awards of the capacity increase of the Purifying Plant of Las Palmas employing state-of-the-art electrodialysis technology and the concession, together with Ferrovial, Necso and Infilco, of the construction and maintenance, during fifteen years, of the desalination plant of Alicante, which will produce a Pta 22.7 billion business.
