In April, Ferrovial presented the financial results for the first quarter of 2015, reporting a net profit increase of 81% compared to the same period last year, reaching 118 million euros.
New contracts awarded include the fourth contract in the ITER project to design and build the high voltage electricity network in the complex situated in Cadarache, in the south of France. Budimex was selected to build a new psychiatric hospital in Ząbki, a town near Warsaw, and to complete the works on a ring road on road 74 in Hrubieszowa, in the province of Lublin.
Other events in April included the third anniversary of the opening of Toledo Ecopark; the opening of the new Allerton Waste Recovery Park, which will reduce waste in landfills in North Yorkshire by 90%; and the launch of Madrid Smart Parking, which is an app to book a free space in a car park. The company also worked on the Global Change Monitoring in the Network of National Parks , and presented 13 innovative solutions implemented in five cities, as part of the "Madrid Smart Lab" and "Cities Open Challenge by Ferrovial" collaborative innovation programmes.
As for awards, Ferrovial's work was recognised on several occasions: Valdecilla Hospital was given the "Project Finance Deal of the Year 2014" award by World Finance magazine, and the "Capilla del Rosario" chapel, restored by Ferrovial Agroman, received the Regional Architecture Award. Heathrow Airport broke its passenger record for this month, with 5.95 million passengers.
As for corporate responsibility, the company signed Social Infrastructure 2014 agreements with an NGO, CESAL, to develop two drinking water supply projects in Mexico and Peru, and with another NGO, Asamblea de Cooperación por la Paz, to build a water treatment plant in Colombia. Ferrovial has also been one of 12 private companies in the world to join the advisory group to promote the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
