HM King Felipe VI of Spain and the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, inaugurate the first phase of the Plasencia-Cáceres-Mérida-Badajoz line.

Ferrovial Construction has executed 124.26 km of the total length of 265.80 km of track on the Plasencia-Badajoz line, which represents 46.75% of the total assembly of this high-speed railway section. In this high-speed corridor, Ferrovial Construction has completed four projects:

1. Track assembly of the Cáceres-Mérida section.

With a total of 42 kilometers of the Madrid-Extremadura high-speed line, this project, awarded in February 2015, included the installation of high-speed Iberian gauge track on a platform built for double track between the Extremadura towns of Cáceres and Mérida.

2. Track assembly of the Mérida-Badajoz section.

The execution of this track assembly construction project, awarded in April 2015, includes more than 35 kilometers of high-speed track assembly in Iberian gauge on platform executed for double track, between the Extremadura towns of Mérida and Badajoz. In total, 34.11 km of AV general track and 1.21 km of track were installed between the connections of La Isla divergence (on the Mérida side) and San Nicolás divergence (from the Badajoz side).

3. Construction project for the duplication of the Cáceres-Mérida section.

This 43.83-kilometer section of the Madrid-Extremadura-Portuguese Border high-speed line was awarded in September 2019 and included the doubling of the high-speed Iberian gauge track on a platform built for double track between the Extremadura towns of Mérida and Badajoz. This action doubled the track executed in the Vía Cáceres assembly contract.

4. The connections between the high-speed line and the conventional track in the Isla fork-San Nicolás divergence section.

This project, awarded in December 2020, makes it possible for the definitive configuration of the high-speed line between Mérida and Badajoz to be a single new Iberian gauge track on a double-track platform (the second track is the existing conventional track).
