Danube Crossing: The four bridges are eventually connected!

  • The bridges have been built with one of the biggest movable scaffolding system technology available today
  • Almost 3km crossing and more than 110,000 m³ of concrete
  • The construction of D4R7 is the biggest infrastructure project in Slovakia

Danube crossing in D4 includes four bridges connected to each other: The Western approach (length 785 m) – over Jarovecké rameno, the bridge over the Kayak track (470 m), the bridge over the Danube (430 m) and the Eastern approach (1250 m), over Biskupické rameno. The last two mentioned bridges are currently connected.

Almost 3km crossing, 35m deck width, around 100 000 m², more than 110,000 m³ of concrete, 40.000Tn reinforcement, 4.000Tn prestressed steel, all together to build Eastern approach (18 segments- regular 70m span), Western approach ( 12 segments- regular span 67.5 m), Danube bridge (130m+170m+130m), Kayak bridge (130m+210m+130m).

The execution of this 3km bridge has been a great challenge for the project, from the execution of the foundations to the closure of the different decks. I want to thank their effort to all the people that have contributed to it, from the designers to the construction team without forgetting H&S, quality, HR, financial… and of course the workforce. Without all of the them the sixth bridge of Bratislava would not be a reality.

Country Manager for Ferrovial Construction at Slovakia

All bridges have been built in 2 phases. Firstly, the core, 14,3m width x 4,3m height for the approaches with one of the biggest movable scaffolding system technology available today in the market and 16,3 width x variable 4,3m-13m height for the Kayak on Danube bridges, using 4 pairs of Form travellers with the balanced cantilever method. Secondly the wings, flying from the central core both sides and elegantly supported through precast struts 40x60cm section to the main box.

I want to express a few words of thanks to this incredible group of people who have worked tirelessly for more than two years to push our company to achieve this goal. You are the clear example that things can be achieved when working in team and in harmony.

Gonzalo Fernández León

Deputy General Manager / Construction Manager

It´s been a long journey since we landed in Slovakia in 2016 and we struggled to get through the woods to the Danube river banks to take a few pictures and figured out how to deal with the challenging big bridge we had in front. Right now, real massive concrete structure is what gives its meaning and will cherish a small piece of our engineering hearts forever.

Pablo Carrera Argibay

Deputy Segment Manager D4W

The construction of D4R7 is currently the biggest infrastructure project not only in Slovakia, it also represents one of the biggest PPP projects in Europe. The concessionaire of the construction project is the company Zero Bypass Ltd., which ensures the financing, construction and 30-year operation of the future bypass of Bratislava.

Company D4R7 Construction s.r.o. is the main contractor of the project, formed by Ferrovial Construction and PORR.
