SH 99 Grand Parkway. Segments H, I-1 & I-2 Houston

Engineering News-Record (ENR) Texas & Louisiana honored Grand Parkway Infrastructure (GPI), a joint venture led by Ferrovial Construction with Webber and Granite Construction, with the Best Highway/Bridge Project award for its work on Segments H, I-1 and I-2 of the SH 99 Grand Parkway project northeast of Houston.

ENR’s independent panel of experts selected 17 Best Projects across 18 categories among 94 entries. Judges considered scope, challenges, safety, innovation, construction quality, aesthetics and if the project was completed on time and within budget.

The design-build project, at a total cost of $1.28 billion, included construction of new lanes and modernization of the existing tolling infrastructure. GPI was awarded a contract in 2017 with an overall construction value of $938 million and recently celebrated the substantial completion and opening of the project in May.

“This award is the result of innovative design, exceptional craftsmanship, environmentally conscious construction and incredible collaboration between all partners, subcontractors and the Texas Department of Transportation,” said Javier Martin Gil, CEO of GPI.

This project (Segments H, I-1 and I-2) represents 53 miles of highway across four Texas counties, more than 90 new or substantially reconstructed bridges, 15 turnarounds, two new two-lane toll facilities, frontage roads, ramps and much more, all completed ahead of schedule and on budget despite hurricanes, COVID and a labor shortage.

Ferrovial Construction specializes in large-scale highway, high-speed rail, bridge construction and airport projects under design-build (DB) and public-private partnerships (P3) with integrated DB and PMO contracts. Since 2006, Ferrovial Construction has been awarded projects totaling more than $13.8 billion in California, Texas, Georgia, Virginia and North Carolina.

Webber is currently working on over 50 heavy civil and waterworks projects and manages 40 infrastructure maintenance contracts in Texas, Georgia, North Carolina, Virginia, Florida and Canada. Webber was ranked the #1 Transportation Contractor in Texas /Louisiana by Engineering News-Record in 2021.
