HETCo Wins Constructing Excellence Award

Local news

HETCo, the Ferrovial Agroman and Laing O’Rourke joint venture has won the “Health & Safety Award” for Heathrow Terminal 2A at the Constructing Excellence in London and the South East Awards.

The highly coveted award was presented at the Church House Conference Centre in London on 20 June 2013.

Building the new Terminal 2 at Heathrow, the UK’s busiest airport, involves negotiating the close proximity to the Southern runway, the London Piccadilly underground line running directly underneath, critical airport service cabling and pipework and upholding the Heathrow brand.

HETCo has to coordinate with three other contractors’ work programmes while managing access and egress for 75 subcontractors, 200 suppliers and a peak workforce of 2,300. HETCo committed to ensuring that 90% of all persons attending T2A would undergo behavioural training within 28 days of starting on site.

This resulted in the implementation of the Incident and Injury Free (IIF) programme completed by 5,298 people. One to one interview schemes were introduced at induction and 4,722 people committed to abide by the safety culture with the numbers growing as the project progresses. Safety behaviour is monitored and reinforced by senior leadership tours, contractor evaluations, sharing and rewarding best practice.

The judging panel for the Health & Safety award reported that: “Achieving an AFR of 0.05 on a billion pound project on a complicated site is a remarkable achievement and testament to widespread adoption of a positive health and safety culture.”

Derek Rees, Regional Director of Constructing Excellence in London and the South East commented: “The construction industry is a vital driver of the UK economy which supports hundreds of thousands of skilled jobs. All our finalists have demonstrated outstanding technical ability and commitment to customer satisfaction, and HETCo thoroughly deserves the recognition.”

Ignacio Clopes, Managing Director, Ferrovial Agroman UK & Ireland: “Making safety personal as well as a non-negotiable value on all our projects is an integral part of how we work. We are very pleased to see this recognised by Constructing Excellence.”

The Constructing Excellence in London and the South East Awards are unique in their recognition of outstanding companies and projects that have delivered improvements in all-round performance through collaborative working and a real desire to make a difference.

All winners are put forward to the National Constructing Excellence Awards which will be announced at a ceremony on the 15th of November 2013.
